COVID Vaccines for Zoo Animals—and Pets?

News Channel 20 (ABC-TV, Springfield, Ill.; September 22) – According to Dr. Samantha Sander, a clinical assistant professor at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, “Most of these cases [in animals] we can trace it back to a person who had COVID who then gave it to the animal,” Sander said. “When we’re talking about dogs and cats, some of them are showing some mild signs, but most of them are not getting very sick.”

Sander says there is an experimental COVID-19 vaccine from the company Zoetis, which is specifically made for animals. Eleven-thousand doses of it were shipped to 70 zoos nationwide earlier this year to protect certain species from the virus.
