Job Description
The Office of Communications and Marketing at the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Illinois is looking for creative veterinary students who want to help elevate the stories of our amazing faculty and students. We have openings for Pet Column writers and social media enthusiasts to help tell our stories through writing, photography, and video.
Pet Column Writer Description: As a pet column writer you will draft articles about animal health in terms the general public can understand, drawing on the expertise of faculty members at the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Illinois.
- The writer will identify topics of interest to animal owners that also showcase the experts and capabilities of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.
- After interviewing the faculty member (or resident or intern, or occasionally a veterinary student), the writer will draft a column for review by the editor (Chris Beuoy).
- After the writer gets the edited copy of the article back, they will review it again and address any questions before sending the article to the faculty member for approval.
- Each column should typically be 500 to 700 words long.
This is an outstanding opportunity for a student who enjoys talking to faculty members and honing their writing and client education skills.
Social Media Ambassador Job Description: The social media team members will:
- Tell your stories from the front line! Take photos or videos of students, faculty, staff, and patients that showcase our hospital and college’s excellent care and education.
- Capture special moments at events or student club/organizations.
- Easy process for submitting stories and your ideas for additional content is always welcome.
- Have additional opportunities to photograph events, host social media take-overs, and more!
Social media team members will become part of the Vet Med Social Media Team and will be looked to for ideas and content throughout the year.

Job Requirements
Requirements: Veterinary medicine student; excellent oral and written skills; accuracy; creativity; storyteller, initiative. Good judgment about situations, a commitment to patient confidentiality, and understanding client approval is needed when featured.
Skills: Familiar with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Instagram stories. Experience with editing apps or software a plus.
