Bird Flu Affects Wildlife in Champaign County

Illinois Public Media (radio; March 18) – Dr. Stephany Lewis, director of the University of Illinois Wildlife Medical Clinic, noted that it’s been three weeks since the clinic had a patient infected with avian influenza, “but that doesn’t mean it’s not out there.” The clinic has instituted a series of changes in response to HPAI: it no longer accepts waterfowl, has suspended overnight intake via the veterinary hospital emergency room, and allows only individuals that have been fit-tested for an N95 mask to handle any birds.
