On October 11, in a touching investiture ceremony that highlighted family ties, two faculty members became the inaugural Dr. John A. Coyne Professors.
Dr. Coyne, a 1974 graduate of the College of Veterinary Medicine, has had a remarkably successful career and continues to enjoy practicing. He and his family have made numerous gifts in support of the college, including to veterinary scholarships and to renovations of the Small Animal Clinic and the Veterinary Medicine South Clinic, which will be renamed in his honor.
Dr. Heidi Phillips, inaugural Dr. John A. Coyne Professor in Small Animal Surgery, has devoted her professional life to improving the lives of dogs and cats through surgical procedures, including laser-assisted turbinectomy and other novel approaches to relieving airway problems in brachycephalic breeds.
Dr. Kimberly A. Selting, now the inaugural Dr. John A. Coyne Professor in Small Animal Clinical Practice, joined the Illinois faculty in 2017 to start our radiation oncology program. Today that program not only treats patients with cancer but also advances new oncologic therapies and trains future radiation oncologists.
This was the second investiture held at the college this year. The first named Drs. Tim Fan and Laura Garrett as inaugural Khan Family Chairs. There will be two more investitures in November. Dr. Anne Barger will become the Dr. Edith Elisabeth Flynn Professor on November 4. On November 14, Dean Peter Constable will be invested as the inaugural Louis I. Mund Professor in Veterinary Medicine, while Dr. Pamela Wilkins will be named the inaugural Delores R. Pajak Professor in Companion Animal Practice.
