We are seeking a veterinary anatomic pathologist committed to providing first-rate diagnostic service in an academic setting that includes teaching veterinary students and pathology residents. Our lab’s anatomic pathology service enjoys a robust and diverse diagnostic surgical biopsy and necropsy caseload from multiple large secondary and tertiary care hospitals as well as general practices, and local, national and international research groups. You will work within a team of five anatomic pathologists at the lab’s Urbana facility. Another five anatomic pathologists are based in Chicago in the lab’s Zoological Pathology Program.
The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory is the only state-supported diagnostic laboratory in Illinois. The laboratory is fully accredited by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians, is a member of the National Animal Health Laboratory Network, and has implemented Standard Operating Procedures for all tests. Our caseload and staff have been growing over the past 15 years, and we are investing in facilities and equipment upgrades.
As part of the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, we participate in the didactic and clinical education of veterinary students (class size of 150 students), pride ourselves in next-level service to veterinary referral partners, and support researchers around the world.

About the Anatomic Pathology Service
- Processed approximately 11,000 biopsies and 1,400 necropsies in 2021
- Full-service necropsy suite with multiple biosafety cabinets, a gross photography station, and a MacroPATH digital imaging system
- Full-service histology laboratory with a large library of histochemical and immunohistochemical stains
- Five anatomic pathologists in Urbana enjoy close communication and collaboration with five clinical pathologists in Urbana and five zoological anatomic pathologists in Chicago
- Five anatomic pathology residents in Urbana trained via small group/classroom learning and continual interaction in surgical biopsy and necropsy settings
- Four ASCP-certified histotechnologists with advanced training in histochemical and immunohistochemical techniques
- Dedicated and seasoned team of lab technicians and assistants
Equipment supplied includes dedicated computer, microscope, and microscope camera; additional technology is available depending on the candidate’s interests.
The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory is growing! Planned equipment upgrades include:
- Renovation of the necropsy floor
- Installation of a large on-site incineration unit
- New specimen receiving office
- High-throughput digital pathology
- In situ hybridization capabilities
