At the U. of I., contact tracers heard about students who had tested positive and then hosted parties, says Rebecca L. Smith, a professor of epidemiology who works on the university’s pandemic response. Some Illinois students deliberately hung out with infected friends to catch the virus and “get it over with,” she says.
