EurekAlert! (Jan. 14) – A study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, coauthored by Dr. Rex Hess, reveals that cilia in the efferent ductules, which carry sperm away from the testes, don’t propel the sperm forward, as was once thought. Instead, the cilia agitate the sperm to keep them from aggregating and clogging the tubes so that they can reach their ultimate destination.
