Biography
Peter Constable became the seventh dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine in 2014. He has led the college through a period of unprecedented growth, including growing faculty numbers to their highest in college history, and increasing the veterinary class size to 160, placing Illinois among the seven largest producers of veterinarians in the country.
At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the college and its Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory played a crucial role helping to develop and deliver a testing system that led to a reduction in illness and death on the Illinois campus, surrounding community, throughout the state and beyond.
Between 2016 and 2022, the college invested $36 million in renovations and additions to its facilities, adding nearly 30,000 sq ft to the footprint of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.
A native Australian, Dean Constable earned his veterinary degree from the University of Melbourne, practiced in Australia and England, and completed an ambulatory internship and food animal medicine and surgery residency at The Ohio State University, where earned both a master’s and a PhD. He is board certified by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and the American College of Veterinary Nutrition.
From 1993 to 2006 he was on the Illinois faculty in the food animal section. He then served as head of the veterinary clinical sciences department at the Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine, until returning to Illinois as dean.
His research focuses on acid-base physiology, fluid therapy, surgical conditions of the bovine abdomen, veterinary education, and the cardiovascular response to endurance training. He has published more than 260 peer-reviewed articles and 30 book chapters and is a co-author of Veterinary Medicine: A Textbook of the Diseases of Cattle, Horses, Sheep, Pigs, and Goats, now in its eleventh edition.
