Biography

Dr. Karen Campbell earned University of Missouri animal science and veterinary medicine degrees with highest honors. She completed an internship in small animal surgery and medicine at Auburn University followed by a residency in small animal internal medicine at the University of Georgia, where she also obtained her masters of science degree in veterinary clinical pathology. Dr. Campbell completed a residency in dermatology at the University of Illinois. She is board-certified in veterinary internal medicine and dermatology. She has served on the University of Illinois Veterinary Medicine faculty for over 30 years and is currently the Head of the Department of Veterinary Clinical Medicine.  Dr. Campbell has had over 70 research grants funded and has published >140 abstracts and proceedings, >100 scientific papers and >40 book chapters. She has given >200 lectures domestically and globally. Dr. Campbell has edited/authored/co-authored 8 textbooks including the 7th Edition of Small Animal Dermatology. and served in various offices, including President, of the American College of Veterinary Dermatology (ACVD). In 2013, she received the ACVD Award of Excellence for Outstanding Contributions in Service and Education in the field of veterinary dermatology. She enjoys having a variety of companion animals as pets, including horses.

Teaching Statement

One of the greatest privileges of working in academia is the opportunity to teach veterinary students and residents. My goal is to encourage students to be critical thinkers who constantly ask questions and thereby advance the profession.
