Palmetto Animal League (PAL) is a private, non-profit animal rescue located in the beautiful lowcountry of Okatie, South Carolina, near Hilton Head Island. Our mission is to build a community where every neglected animal has a second chance at life.
PAL is offering a fantastic opportunity for a veterinarian seeking an exciting, challenging, and rewarding position that brings together the best aspects of shelter medicine, private practice, and nonprofit advocacy in one package. PAL has a very progressive and modern sheltering style, are we looking for a veterinarian excited to join our mission and help us stay at the top of our game. An ideal candidate would be a passionate advocate for animal welfare with experience in both the shelter medicine and private practice worlds. PAL currently houses 200 animals in our shelter, and also operates a high quality affordable veterinary clinic for the community. An additional priority is educating the community about animal care and welfare.

The position is full-time/salaried with 4 weeks paid time off.
Reimbursement for licenses and liability insurance.
Salary range is $90,000 to $100,000 depending on experience.
Housing/relocation stipend of $1000/month.
Excellent opportunity for a new veterinarian to mentor under three experienced vets and to learn business practices without the investment. This is also an excellent opportunity to gain client relationship skills in our community vet clinic serving clients from three counties.
PAL is ready for a veterinarian that can pull all aspects of our veterinary operations together and be an intrical part of our programs and services to the community. We need to expand veterinary outreach even further to make sure we include as many pets as possible. We need to expand our wellness and prevention services and provide the highest level of care for our adoption center pets. We have a dynamic team of professional vets to assist the staff vet with public surgery, rescue surgery, internal medicine, shelter medicine protocols and non-routine cases.

Position: Shelter Veterinarian
Scope of Position:
To perform and oversee all veterinary services for shelter animals and community clinic clients.. Maximize the use of clinic resources to ensure all animal resident health at a minimum cost. To provide high quality affordable veterinary services to the community at a low cost for the health and welfare of community clinic client animals.To provide medical care as well as humane care and treatment to all animals in accordance with the policies and procedures established by the President and Board of Directors.

Duties and Responsibilities
Work collaboratively with the staff. Be a leader in our organization.
Diagnose and treat medical conditions in all PAL animals. Follow progress of all patients placed on treatment, keeping records of all treatments and final outcomes in coordination with the Adoption Center staff.
Direct, conduct and evaluate treatment plans, disease control measures and hands-on medical treatment and progress of animals housed at the adoption center including but not limited to:
Vaccine protocols
Nutrition and feeding protocols
Parasite control measures
Housing and sanitation
Treatment protocols for routine infectious diseases
Preventative medicine procedures
Emergency evaluation, treatment and procedures
pre- adoption exams in accordance with PAL policies and procedures
Create, implement and measure compliance with procedures and protocols to ensure continued health.
Develop, conduct and monitor medical program protocols and procedures.
Direct, and conduct a cost contained sterilization program, including performance of ovariohysterectomies and castrations on cats and dogs. Supervise all aspects of the procedures including anesthesia and postoperative care of the patient.
Perform non-sterilization surgical procedures when deemed appropriate for the placement of a PAL animal and for the health and welfare of clinic client animals with an emphasis in keeping animals in their homes.
Oversee the scheduling of outside veterinary resources for procedures not available at PAL. This responsibility is limited to scheduled hours as PAL does not conduct after-hours emergency treatment at this time. The vet will decide what treatments or procedures are needed in coordination with other Managers as appropriate.
Assist with internal and public relations consultations and education services as they pertain to veterinary medical issues.
Provide telephone consultation with staff as needed during normal business hours.
Various duties as assigned by the President.

Qualifications:
Graduate of an accredited school of veterinary medicine or equivalent.
Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the state of South Carolina.
Enthusiasm for shelter medicine is strongly desired.
Ability to conduct high quality surgical sterilizations in a fast paced environment is a plus.
Must have a valid driver’s license.
Federal Accreditation required.
Must possess or have the ability to obtain an DEA license.
Acquire and possess a thorough understanding of and dedication to the philosophies of animal welfare and no kill sheltering.
