Faculty Spotlight: Matthew Berry, DVM, PhD, DACVIM (Oncology)

Dr. Matthew Berry

Dr. Berry is an assistant professor and clinician in the oncology service.

Tell us about your background.

I grew up in southern Illinois and developed my passion for veterinary medicine during high school, after I landed my first job as a kennel worker at a local clinic. This opportunity allowed me to see the life of a veterinarian, and I was quickly captivated.

I started college in St. Louis, Missouri, before being accepted into veterinary school at U. of I. Although I gained research experience during my undergraduate studies, my curiosity in research did not spark until I met Dr. Tim Fan and participated in the college’s Summer Research Training Program.

After veterinary school I pursued advanced clinical training in medical oncology and research training in a PhD program.

How did you become interested in oncology?

My interest in studying cancer sequentially evolved from personal experiences: first, having my childhood dogs succumb to this disease, and then, my father who has been continually battling colorectal cancer over the last 12 years.

My curiosity from these personal experiences shaped my interest in learning cellular and molecular biology and the exciting field of cancer immunology.

Tell us about a favorite case of yours.

Lymphoma is a frequently diagnosed cancer in pets, and it can sometimes lead to critical illness before the diagnosis is made. Witnessing a swift turnaround after emergency treatment is incredibly rewarding.

For example, a chocolate Labrador that came in critically ill turned out to have lymphoma. After just three days of emergent cancer treatment and supportive care, he was discharged. Within a week, his owners reported a complete return to his normal routine and quality of life. He continued to thrive, enjoying over three years of life after his diagnosis.

What are your special interests inside or outside of the clinic?

In the clinic, I have a proclivity toward research/clinical trials, and I am particularly excited about how my unique training can help bring exciting basic science discoveries into a clinical setting.

Outside of the clinic, I enjoy outdoor adventures with my wife and two daughters. Our favorite local camping spot is Clinton Lake State Park. We also enjoy road trips with our travel trailer and visiting national parks.
