Faculty Member Speaks on Sustainability in Veterinary Medicine

AVMA News (July 7) – Dr. William Sander, assistant professor for preventive medicine and public health at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, is presenting at the AVMA Convention 2025, taking place July 18-22 in Washington, D.C.

“Climate change will also impact our businesses with costs of energy, supplies, and equipment,” Dr. Sander told AVMA News, because of increased natural disasters and zoonoses.

He noted some real-world examples, including vector-borne diseases and water- or heat-related issues, such as heat stress in production animals that can lead to decreased milk production and growth rates, as well as altered reproductive physiology.

While there may be greater costs associated with pursuing sustainability in the short term, Dr. Sander said the longer-term cost of inaction will be higher.
