WCIA-TV News (May 13) – Dr. Jim Lowe, veterinary clinical medicine, explained that the avian influenza virus infects animals via a specific receptor found in birds but not in mammals, although cows have both receptor types in their udders. “And this virus hasn’t shown any indication that it’s likely to adapt and grab that mammalian receptor. So, not particularly a risk to humans,” he said.
