Medical Daily (Aug. 31) – Psychogenic polydipsia is thinly documented in dogs. A review of the veterinary literature published this year in the Journal of Small Animal Practice by Gene Pavlovsky at the University of Illinois notes that while the condition is relatively common and well described in people, little published information exists on its pathogenesis, diagnosis or treatment in dogs. Whether a case of primary polydipsia counts as psychogenic should depend on demonstrating an associated behavioral disorder, not simply on ruling out every physical cause. By that stricter standard, the review found behavior-based investigation and management described in only seven reports in the entire literature.
