American Kennel Club (April 30) – The drug of choice for blastomycosis, itraconazole, should come in the pellet, not powdered, form. Dr. Jennifer Reinhart, an Illinois veterinary clinical medicine professor, explains why: “To overcome [the problem of the drug not dissolving in water], the company who originally developed itraconazole used tiny sugar pellets and coated them with the itraconazole powder. This creates a lot of surface area from which the itraconazole can mix with water and dissolve, which will then allow the gut cells to absorb the drug.”
