This internship program is focused on providing a mentored experience, preparing the applicant for an entry-level position in private practice or an ABVP–Equine Practice residency.

Midwest Equine at Illinois is a satellite clinic of the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine functioning as a private practice.

The two main goals that Midwest Equine has for this internship include:

  • Applicant exposure to cases routinely encountered in a primary care practice, with a focus on common presentations with practical solutions
  • Providing exemplary customer service; practicing medicine in the best interest of the horse, balanced with the client’s needs and expectations

Applicants will participate in daily ambulatory and outpatient clinic cases and will be expected to participate in after-hours and weekend on-call duties in a rotating schedule with clinician support. Academic support, i.e., journal club, intern topic rounds, etc., will be provided by ABVP-Equine Practice, ACVS-LA, ACVSMR, and ACVIM-LA diplomates in the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine.

Eligibility for Illinois licensure is not required for participation in this program; however, Illinois licensure and USDA accreditation are highly desirable. Intern candidates must have graduated from an AVMA-accredited college of veterinary medicine or have successfully completed the ECFVG.
