Clinical Assistant Professor, Lecturer, or Instructor in Zoological Medicine

We are seeking a veterinarian with a passion for wildlife medicine and for working closely with veterinary students to develop their clinical and leadership skills. The successful candidate will grow a vibrant outreach program by building donor and community relationships, planning and managing budgets, and elevating the visibility and reputation of the program. This position participates in delivering clinical laboratories and didactic teaching as part of the college’s Doctor of Veterinary Medicine curriculum.

The primary responsibility will be to serve as director of the Wildlife Medical Clinic. The mission of the Wildlife Medical Clinic is to provide veterinary care to sick or injured wild animals, to educate veterinary student and wildlife professionals about wildlife medicine, and to promote conservation initiatives and ecosystem health through collaborative research, dissemination of scientific information, and public education programs.

The clinic engages approximately 130 veterinary and undergraduate student volunteers each year. These students work in teams, under veterinary supervision, to care for around 2,000 ill or injured native Illinois wildlife annually, typically representing more than 100 species. In addition, the clinic provides care and enrichment for nine non-releasable ambassador animals that are featured in outreach and training events.

This position also works with two hospital house officers completing ACZM-compliant residencies who rotate through the Wildlife Medical Clinic and assist with patient care and student volunteer oversight.

The Wildlife Medical Clinic occupies recently renovated and purpose-built space in the Veterinary Medicine South Clinic. Newly installed imaging and surgical facilities are located within the building, and there are opportunities to consult with veterinary specialists throughout the Veterinary Teaching Hospital on cases as needed. In the coming year we anticipate beginning a new renovation to create an onsite classroom facility that will enable year-round educational outreach to schools and other organizations. A new outbuilding houses the nine ambassador animals, providing access to outdoor enclosures as well as internal shelter that features running water and electricity. The structure offers an outdoor seating area ideal for educational presentations.

This position is a faculty member in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Medicine and a service head within the Veterinary Teaching Hospital’s section for Community Outreach, Urgent/Convenient Care, Primary Care & Wildlife Services. Opportunities exist to contribute to large and diverse research programs focused on wildlife medicine.

Zoological Medicine Clinical Assistant Professor

We are seeking an outstanding zoological medicine professional to join our collaborative and supportive service that cares for a wide breadth of species, including zoo companion animals, ambulatory service to regional zoos, and wildlife patients brought by the public to the college’s Wildlife Medical Clinic.

The zoo companion service shares, with the hospital’s dog/cat primary care service, a newly renovated standalone clinical facility across the street from the college’s full Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Our building features digital radiology, a surgical/anesthetic suite, dedicated wards, and client reception. We readily access advanced imaging, clinical pathology, a full diagnostic laboratory, and a host of other clinical specialists for consultation with the teaching hospital. Additionally, the University of Illinois campus offers many opportunities for interdisciplinary research and collaboration.

This position offers a meaningful opportunity to mentor the next generation of specialists through two ACZM-compliant residencies (zoo and aquatic animal medicine and zoo companion animal medicine), a specialty internship, and several zoo-med interested rotating interns each year

In addition, this position will educate veterinary students by delivering labs and lectures throughout the DVM curriculum, including supervising fourth-year veterinary students on the zoo companion animal rotation. Our zoo med offerings are well developed but there are abundant opportunities to develop new lectures, laboratories, and courses.

The zoological medicine service in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital falls within the Companion & Zoological Animal Medicine Section. Three full-time veterinary technicians work in the zoo companion service and develop their abilities and knowledge by attending national continuing education programs each year..
