Environmental Health News (Charlottesville, Va., July 1) – A pilot study found that Black and Latinx hairdressers are exposed to high levels of hormone-mimicking phthalates on the job. “It’s really concerning because a lot of hairdressers are reproductive-age women,” says Dr. Susan Schantz, a neurotoxicologist and professor emerita at the U. of I. who was not involved in the study. “And there’s lots of research out there to suggest that there are risks from prenatal exposure to phthalates.”
