Deceased patients submitted for necropsy should be presented to the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL), not to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.
VDL requires a submission form signed by the referring veterinarian for every necropsy specimen. The form can be brought by the owners or faxed/emailed by the clinic; it establishes a VDL account for the referring clinic.
Direct your client to the orange door on the west (back) side of the Basic Sciences Building, accessible from St. Mary’s Road. They should enter through the orange door and take the body to the receiving window. If your client needs help, they may call the VDL.
For delivery after hours, a veterinarian must call to alert VDL before the client arrives to submit the body in the drop-off cooler. If the call is made after hours, the veterinarian should select the option to speak with the after-hours pathologist.
The necropsy will be billed to the referring clinic, which may pass the charge to the client. The report will be sent to the submitting veterinarian after the examination is complete.
VDL receiving hours are Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm, and Saturdays, 9 am to noon.
The VDL phone number is 217-333-1620.
