A multi-year $9 million expansion effort that will touch nearly every service area in the hospital is moving ahead.
In January, primary care services for dogs and cats as well as zoological companion species will relocate from the hospital to a recently acquired building on the south side of Hazelwood Drive, aptly named the South Clinic. Senior veterinary students will be empowered to take a more active role in both patient care and clinic management in this new setting.
A state-of-the-art small animal surgical wing, with eight operating suites and a dedicated induction area, will be completed in April. The space vacated by surgery will be renovated for an expanded emergency services area, with improved patient flow between ER and ICU. A step-down ward will provide intermediate care for patients that don’t need full ICU-level monitoring.
The Large Animal Clinic will undergo extensive upgrades to the equine surgical suite next summer. A new 128-slice computed tomography scanner, which can accommodate equine patients, has recently been installed.
