Cardiology service at the University of Illinois is provided by specialists who are board-certified in internal medicine, critical care and diagnostic imaging and who have received additional training in echocardiography. Our Internal Medicine clinicians see new patients and perform reevaluations of existing patients on a daily basis.
Available services include:

  • Diagnosis and treatment of heart failure, including critical care of cardiac patients
  • Diagnosis and treatment of arrhythmia
  • Basic echocardiography for evaluation of valvular, myocardial, and pericardial disorders
  • Diagnosis and treatment of hypertension
  • Evaluation of most congenital heart defects

We are offering surgical treatment of animals with patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) as well. Common Signs of Heart Disease in Animals:

  • Difficult or labored breathing
  • Coughing
  • Changes in exercise ability
  • Fainting spells

The Skills and Procedures Provided by the Cardiology Service

  • Physical exam to detect heart murmurs
  • Electrocardiograms (ECG) to examine the electrical activity of the heart
  • Radiographs (X-rays) to examine the size and shape of the heart and lungs
  • Cardiac Ultrasound (Echocardiography) to examine the valves and muscle of the heart
  • Specialized Cardiac Studies such as Doppler and color-flow ultrasound
  • Management of congenital and acquired heart disease
