The Companion Animal Related Emotions Pet Loss Helpline is a confidential telephone service offered through the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. Those who are either grieving the loss of a companion animal or are anticipating a loss are encouraged to call to find a compassionate, understanding person who will listen and offer support.
The helpline is staffed by veterinary students who understand the importance of the human-animal bond and the emotions involved when that bond is threatened or altered. The students have received training by professional grief counselors and undergo continued supervision by a licensed clinical social worker.
Calls focus on the emotions related to pet loss. To discuss specifics of an animal's illness or questions of a medical nature, callers are directed to contact a veterinarian. Callers who may need mental health services are assisted in identifying appropriate referral options in their community.
