Russman is a farrier.
Tell us about your background.
I’ve spent the past 18 years around horses. I’ve done anything from riding to working as a groom, managing, and training. After finishing with my associate’s degree in science in 2017, I then graduated from farrier school in Oklahoma.
In my seven years as a farrier, I have run my own farrier business in Virginia and West Virginia. In 2022, I moved to Michigan to apprentice with the farrier at Michigan State University’s farrier school while also seeing my own clients.
I completed my Certified Farrier exam in the spring of 2023 and have since been working toward my Certified Journeyman exam.
How did you become interested in becoming a farrier?
I have always wanted to work with horses for my career. I tried a few different paths, but being a farrier was the one I really seemed to enjoy the most. I liked the challenge and the ability to help make horses better on a daily basis.
What do you enjoy most about being a farrier at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital?
I enjoy being able to work with an amazing team of farriers and veterinarians to help horses every single day. I enjoy the challenges each day and constantly getting to learn and improve my skills.
What are your special interests inside or outside of the clinic?
I love to do anything outdoors, from going on walks and hikes, to camping, fishing, kayaking, and of course, riding horses! I also enjoy spending time with my fiancé, my dog Lilly, and my horse Khanner.
