This internship program will prepare you for successful integration into a busy full-service veterinary practice or for a residency and eventual board certification in various specialties.

Veterinary Medicine South Clinic is a full-service, AAHA-accredited practice that includes dedicated dentistry suites, operating rooms, diagnostic testing, and imaging services.

The Veterinary Teaching Hospital at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is offering two 12-month post-DVM internships in small animal primary and urgent/convenient care.

Prepare yourself for successful integration into a busy full-service veterinary practice with an internship in a state-of-the-art clinic with surgical, dental, and imaging facilities.

Your time will be divided between Small Animal Primary Care and Urgent/Convenient Care services, with approximately 50% of your service with each.

This internship is designed to provide experience in all areas of clinical case work up and management, including routine surgical intervention, with faculty guidance. Some experiences in this internship include:

  • Primary case responsibility on Primary Care and Urgent Care services during daytime, evening, and weekend receiving (Under the supervision of faculty members)
  • Working with fourth-year veterinary students to provide wellness services to members of the community
  • Perform surgery on client-owned animals (under general supervision of clinical faculty)
  • Mentor fourth year veterinary students
  • Mentor the first- and second-year veterinary students during their clinical rotations and perform shelter staff educational training

Requirements:

  • Graduate of an AVMA-accredited college of veterinary medicine or successful completion the ECFVG or PAVE.
  • Eligibility for Illinois licensure must be obtained, as well as a valid DEA certification.
  • Must have valid Illinois driver’s license and cell phone with texting capability.

A $12 million hospital-wide renovation and expansion project wrapped up in 2021. Over the past six years we’ve added:

  • A 9,000 sq ft small animal surgery wing with 8 ORs, including an interventional radiology suite
  • A state-of-the-art linear accelerator and a new 128-slice CT to support its use
  • A 3T MRI
  • A new facility for small animal primary care, zoological medicine specialty service, and our Wildlife Medical Clinic
