Recognizing Excellence: 2018 College Awards for Faculty, Staff, and Residents

On October 16, the college presented nine individuals with awards at the annual Excellence Awards Recognition Program, hosted by Dean Peter Constable.

Chelsia Foil, veterinary technician in the Equine Medicine and Surgery service at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, received the Shirley Seets Staff Excellence Award for demonstrated excellence in job performance and service.

Vicky Edwards, chief clerk for client services in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, received the Dr. Robert and Lucy Graham Award for a staff member who has made outstanding contributions.

Dr. Bahaa Fadl-Alla, an instructor and veterinary research specialist in the Department of Pathobiology, received the Terry and Judy Rathgeber Academic Professional Excellence Award for outstanding performance by an academic professional staff member.

Dr. Samantha Vitale, a resident in neurology, received the Dr. Walter E. Hoffmann and Dr. Ann L. Johnson Resident Teaching Excellence Award for an outstanding graduate student or resident in training for an AVMA-recognized specialty board.

Dr. William Witola, assistant professor in the Department of Pathobiology, received the Zoetis Animal Health Award for Research Excellence, presented to a current faculty member who shows promise of attaining or has already attained national recognition.

Dr. Dongwan Yoo, professor and director of graduate studies in the Department of Pathobiology, received the Dr. Gordon and Mrs. Helen Kruger Research Excellence Award in recognition of quality and quantity of publications, research awards, and outside recognition of the nominee’s work.

Dr. Devon Hague, clinical associate professor in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Medicine and head of the neurology section in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, received the Dr. Gordon and Mrs. Helen Kruger Service Excellence Award for outstanding committee work, clinical service and continuing education.

Dr. Carol Maddox, professor in the Department of Pathobiology and microbiology section head in the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, received the Dr. Gordon and Mrs. Helen Kruger All-Around Excellence Award. This is presented to the faculty member who demonstrates excellence in teaching, research, and service.

Dr. Larry Firkins, professor in the Department of Pathobiology and associate dean of public engagement, received the Kuhlenschmidt Innovative Teaching Award. This award was endowed in 2017 by a 1998 DVM graduate of the college to acknowledge the important influence of professor emeritus Mark Kuhlenschmidt.
