Dr. Ken Welle Joins the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital

URBANA -- After 22 years of running his own private practice, Dr. Ken Welle, of All Creatures Animal Hospital in Urbana, joined the clinical staff at the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital this month.

Owners of exotic pets can make an appointment to see Dr. Welle in his new practice location, at 1008 West Hazelwood Drive, Urbana, by calling 217-333-5300.

Dr. Welle is also the state's only board certified veterinarian in avian medicine, and his private practice has focused on the care of birds and other exotic pets. He will continue to care for exotic pets as he joins three other veterinarians in the hospital's exotic animal service. The four veterinarians have nearly 60 years' combined experience in clinical exotic animal medicine.

Because of the teaching hospital's host of veterinary specialists, unmatched facilities for diagnosis and treatment, as well as the round-the-clock emergency and intensive care, Dr. Welle believes the move is best for him and his patients.

"The surgical staff has arguably the best exotic animal surgeon in the world," he said, "(and) the veterinarians who staff the hospital's emergency room and ICU are trained to provide supportive care and triage for the gamut of exotic pets that I see."

Throughout his years as a veterinarian, Dr. Welle has spoken at local, national and international professional meetings, as well as published textbook chapters and journal articles. He has continuously been committed to educating veterinary students by teaching courses at the University of Illinois, Purdue University and at St. George's University in Grenada.

Dr. Welle graduated from the College of Veterinary Medicine in 1988 and has been an assistant professor, teaching avian, exotic and wildlife medicine since 1991.

All Creatures Animal Hospital in Urbana continues to offer veterinary care for dogs and cats under the direction of Dr. Mary Welle.

The University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital is the most comprehensive veterinary facility in the state of Illinois, with advanced diagnostic and treatment capabilities and more than 80 veterinarians on faculty or in specialty training programs.
