Jodi Flaws is a professor and the assistant head of the Department of Comparative Biosciences.
When did you begin working at the College of Veterinary Medicine?
I joined the CVM as a professor of Comparative Biosciences in August of 2006. Its hard to believe, but I have been in CB longer than everyone else except for Dr. Indrani Bagchi.
Describe your role at the college.
I am a professor who primarily conducts research on the effects of environmental chemicals on female reproductive health. I also direct our T32 Interdisciplinary Training Program in Environmental Health and Toxicology and co-direct the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience in Toxicology Program. In addition, I teach veterinary medical students about endocrinology in VM602 and lead three graduate courses: 1) Reproductive and Developmental Toxicology, 2) Systems Toxicology, and 3) Grant Writing.
Have you held any previous titles or responsibilities at the college?
Yes, I served as interim head of the CB department for 1 year while we were searching for a new head to replace the previous head who retired. I co-lead the Environmental Impacts on Reproduction Theme in the IGB with Dr. Indrani Bagchi.
What is your favorite part of your job?
Training the next generation of scientists and veterinarians. I love working with students!

My first day because I felt so welcomed and immediately made many long-term friends and collaborators. I feel as happy to be here almost 20 years later as I was on day 1.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
Traveling, walking/hiking, spending time with family and friends.
What is something your co-workers may be surprised to know about you?
I love horror movies.
What is one thing on your bucket list?
To travel to Bora Bora and Tahiti.
Do you have a favorite restaurant or place in the Champaign/Urbana area?
Definitely Nandos – I love Italian food and Nandos is the best restaurant in town.
Aside from necessities, what one thing could you not go a day without?
Chocolate.
Do you have any pets?
Sadly, I cannot have pets because I am allergic to most animals. My dream pet would be an English Mastiff, Saint Bernard, or Boxer.
