Illinois Ticks Trigger Meat Allergy in People

Jacksonville Journal-Courier (Oct. 22) — Alpha-gal syndrome, a potentially life-changing allergy triggered by tick bites, is drawing growing concern in Illinois as the ticks linked to the condition spread north. Illinois epidemiology professor Becky Smith says more cases are being diagnosed as awareness improves and a growing lone star tick population could also mean more people are at risk. As lone star ticks, long common in southern Illinois, continue to move north, she stressed the condition could become more prevalent in urban and populated areas historically never thought to be of concern.
