Farm Week (April 22) – Dr. Leyi Wang, a veterinary virologist at the University of Illinois Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, is working with the University of Kentucky Gluck Equine Research Center to study HPAI in horses. So far, data indicate that the chances of a HPAI spillover to U.S. horses is very low.
His laboratory is also active in ensuring that equine infectious anemia (EIA), a serious and sometimes fatal viral disease for horses, remains rare in Illinois. Over the past two years, the lab has performed over 13,000 Coggins tests (to identify antibodies for EIA virus in the blood).
