Global Threat of African Swine Fever

Wired (New York City, Oct. 12) – There is no vaccine and no treatment for African swine fever, which recently killed half the pigs in China. Now it’s in the Caribbean and on the doorstep of the U.S. The challenge, says Raymond Robert Rowland, head of pathobiology at the U. of I. College of Veterinary Medicine, is that the disease is spread by movement. “Where do people come from to vacation in the Caribbean?” he says. “Name a country in the world: Eastern Europe, China, Africa, all areas that have ASF. You can easily think of a scenario where someone brings in a contaminated product, discards it into compost or garbage, and feral pigs come along and pick it up.”
