Research for DVM Students

Whether you have selected a research-focused career path or you simply want to explore the possibility, Illinois offers opportunities for you.

The Veterinary Medical Scholars Program enables students to pursue a veterinary degree and a PhD in a complementary field. Students apply for admission to this program at the same time they apply for admission to the DVM program, or they may apply during the first or second year of the DVM program. Applicants must have demonstrated research experience and motivation toward a research-focused career.

The Summer Research Training Program is a 10-week experience. Students work full-time with a faculty research mentor, explore career options for veterinarian scientists, and attend the National Veterinary Scholars Symposium.

Many Illinois veterinary students participate in research opportunities outside of the formal programs that are listed above. Identifying a research opportunity is sometimes as easy as visiting with a faculty member whose interests you share. The College of Veterinary Medicine Research Office can also assist with identifying research opportunities for DVM students.
