Due the changing nature of medicine and science, fundamentally, my philosophy in teaching professional students and house officers is to instill a sense of life long learning.   The students, interns and residents should walk out of this institution of higher education realizing that their education is far from over.  I hope to instill as sense of excitement that they will continue to learn, practice and grow professionally throughout their lives.

Many students can find neurology perplexing and confusing due to the complexity of the anatomy and pathology.  This can be compounded by the data showing that the self-esteem of veterinary students decreases during the course of their veterinary school career.  Therefore, another one of my fundamental goals in the classroom and clinic floor is to foster an environment of collegiality, respect, and fun, where students feel valued.  Students need to feel comfortable taking the risk to ask questions of the material and of faculty in order to have the opportunity for self-discovery.
