D.V.M., University of Minnesota
Diplomate, American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (Equine Practice)
For Dr. Dennis French, being a veterinarian runs in the family. His father practiced veterinary medicine in Minnesota for 40 years, and his daughter graduated from veterinary school in 2009.
Dr. French graduated from the University of Minnesota with a special recognition for excellence in Equine Medicine and Surgery. He spent the majority of his career at Louisiana State University until joining the University of Illinois in 2009. He has served as president of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners and president of the Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association, and currently is the liaison to the American Board of Veterinary Specialists, for ABVP as well as the examination chair.
At the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Dr. French is the chief of the Rural Animal Health Management System. He spends his days overseeing the examination and treatment of cattle, sheep, goats, cervids, horses, and camelids. He oversees the care of animals both at the hospital and on the farm through the hospital's ambulatory service.
In addition, Dr. French enjoys teaching students and engaging them in real-world veterinary experiences. He also has an interest in research, and has investigated the effects of new drugs on parasites that impact the health of large animals. He has authored or co-authored 60 manuscripts, most of which deal with this topic.
At home Dr. French and his wife are joined by two Labrador retrievers, three cats, four horses, and several chickens. The couple are active in natural resource conservation.
