Medical Services - Equine

Each year, the Veterinary Teaching Hospital cares for thousands of horses, both as inpatients and through the ambulatory medicine service. Our patients include top race horses, other performance horses, pleasure horses and breeding stock.

Unique facilities and expertise available here help us quickly diagnose and treat your animal’s problem. An on-site veterinary diagnostic laboratory provides rapid test results to assist in diagnosis.

Equine

Patients that require surgery, radiation therapy or other treatment or diagnostic procedures will benefit from our clinic’s sophisticated anesthesiology approaches and monitoring equipment.

Our reproductive services include breeding evaluations for mares and stallions, semen collection, artificial insemination, embryo transfer and reproductive surgery.

EQUINE RESEARCH
Our clinic contributes to new knowledge about equine health through research. Areas of current study include:

  • Infectious diseases of the respiratory system
  • Reproductive physiology and endocrinology
  • Exercise-based pulmonary hemorrhage (bleeders)
  • Joint disease
  • Long bone fracture repair
  • Upper-airway surgery
  • Forensic detection of drugs
  • Lameness, laminitis, arthritis and osteomyelitis

  • A large staff of specialists skilled in equine medicine, surgery, dentistry and reproduction
  • An equine intensive care unit for round-the-clock care
  • State-of-the-art diagnostic capabilities using computerized radiography, ultrasound and nuclear imaging
  • Equipment for minimally invasive surgery, such as arthroscopy and laparascopy
  • Video endoscopy equipment for the upper respiratory, urinary tracts and stomach
  • Two equine surgery suites featuring modern surgery tables and padded recovery rooms
  • Two climate-controlled equine wards with a total of 57 box stalls
  • A therapeutic farrier who uses hoof reconstruction materials and advanced techniques for shoeing horses and dealing with lameness
  • A high-speed treadmill for evaluating horses with poor performance
  • Laser surgery for diseases of the upper respiratory tract
  • Shock wave therapy for hard and soft tissue diseases

To expand our leadership in veterinary education, service and discovery, the College recently crafted a comprehensive plan for facilities needed to keep pace with our anticipated growth over the next 20 years.
