Tissue Paper Butterfly Craft

Did you know?

There are over 15,000 species of butterflies around the world, and about 750 butterfly species here in the United States! Butterflies come in a multitude of colors, which is created by the reflection of light through layers of thousands of microscopic scales that cover their wings.

Here is a fun craft you can do at home to design your own beautiful butterfly!

Supplies:

1 clothespin

Assortment of colored tissue paper

1 pair of googly eyes

Glue

Scissors

Pen

Ruler

Pipecleaners (optional)

Markers (optional)

Step 1

Measure and cut out a total of three 6-inch squares of tissue paper. Feel free to choose whichever colored tissue paper you would like!

Step 2

Take 2 of your tissue paper squares and lay them on top of each other. Then, fold them back and forth to create a fan-shaped appearance.

Step 3

Insert the middle of the tissue paper into the clothespin. Then spread out the tissue paper to form wings.

Step 4

Tightly roll up your last tissue paper square into a straw shape. Then fold your “straw” in half. These are your antennae. Alternatively, you can use a pipe cleaner for your antennae.

Step 5

Insert the antennae into the clothespin. Glue googly eyes and draw a smiley face on the clothespin. You can also personalize your butterflies by drawing designs or by gluing on different shapes of tissue paper onto the wings.

We hope you will share a photo of your creation on our Facebook (@UIWMC) page so we can admire your handiwork!
