Falconers in Decatur confront utility about non-insulated wires.
After the death of his red-tailed hawk, Eva, from brushing against non-insulated wires around a transformer, falconer Martin Hadley is hoping to bring awareness to other falconers. Although new transformers are installed with insulated wires, according to an Ameren spokesperson, a program to retrofit older transformers would be cost-prohibitive. The company has worked with federal agencies and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to develop an “Avian Protection Plan” after prodding from consultants like Jacques Nuzzo at Decatur’s Illinois Raptor Center.
