Congratulations to Widaliz Vega-Rodriguez for receiving a Graduate Teaching Assistantship as a Group Leader for the Summer Predoctoral Institute (SPI) in the Graduate College this summer.
The Summer Predoctoral Institute (SPI) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (Illinois) provides incoming graduate students from U.S. populations underrepresented at Illinois with an early introduction to graduate study and an opportunity to work with a summer research advisor in their department. SPI will assist participants in becoming socialized into the departmental culture, as well as afford them an opportunity to prepare for the rigors of their graduate program.
During the six-week summer session, each participant will enroll in an independent study course directed by their advisor and fulfill virtual participation with training and acclimation activities. Students will participate in a series of online seminars on research writing and grad school culture, which will respectively provide a foundation for dissertation research and enable the student to become acquainted with the expectations of their graduate program.

Congratulations to Dr. Yung-Tien (Yvette) Tien on winning the People’s Choice Award for the 2020 Image of Research competition!
Marek’s disease is a viral epidemic disease that causes billions of dollars in economic loss in the poultry industry. It is caused by Gallid alphaherpesvirus 2 which transforms T lymphocytes into lymphomas. The infection of feather follicular epithelial cells starts the spreading of virus from chicken to chicken by shedding viral particles so when chickens flap their wings, the virus goes into the air and other chickens inhale the virus and become infected. Everything happens naturally and unseen, which is the beauty of microbiology.
