Antimicrobial Stewardship in Small Animal Practice: a Summary of Current Guidelines for Urinary, Respiratory, and Gastrointestinal Diseases
Given the rise in antimicrobial resistance among important human and veterinary pathogens, judicious and evidence-based selection of antibiotics is a critical skill for the small animal practitioner. However, the rapidly growing body of veterinary research in antimicrobial stewardship makes it difficult to keep current in this area. This presentation will summarize the current recommendations for antimicrobial use in urinary, respiratory, and gastrointestinal diseases of the dog and cat based on consensus guidelines from the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and the International Society for Companion Animal Infectious Diseases. Online resources for use in clinical practice will be highlighted.
