The purpose of Directed Elective rotations is to guide students in choosing from a limited pool of specialty rotations according to their species of interest. Because on-campus caseload for certain species is limited, some off campus rotations are permitted for non-small animal species.
- A Directed Elective rotation option may only be taken once as a Directed Elective rotation. If a Directed Elective rotation option is scheduled more than once, the first scheduled rotation will be applied as the Directed Elective rotation option and the second scheduled rotation will be counted as a Free Elective rotation.
- A single UI or Off-campus Directed Elective rotation of 2 to 3 blocks in duration counts as 2 or 3 blocks, respectively.
- A maximum of 3 off-campus blocks may be applied toward Directed Elective rotations.
- Off-campus Directed Elective rotations must be directed toward the student’s non-small animal professional area(s) of interest (e.g. equine practice and food animal practice). Students must seek advice from faculty and other professionals in their area(s) of interest when choosing off-campus Directed Elective rotations.
- No off-campus small animal rotations are permitted as Directed Elective rotations.
Students must choose from the following Directed Elective rotation options:
- UI Cardiology
- UI Dentistry
- UI Dermatology
- UI Equine Theriogenology
- UI Lab Animal Medicine
- UI Neurology
- UI Oncology
- UI Ophthalmology
- UI Population Medicine
- UI Public Health
- UI Zoological Medicine (Brookfield Zoo – limited enrollment)
- OC Beef
- OC Dairy

Any UI Core or UI Directed Elective rotation may also be repeated one time as a Free Elective. The following UI Associated Electives may also be taken.
Any of the following types of OC rotations may be taken as Free Electives:
- Off Blocks are assigned by the Office of Academic & Student Affairs.
- Students who must have particular blocks off due to scheduled commitments will have the opportunity to request this during the scheduling process. Requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Split Blocks:
- Students taking off campus rotations that are out of synch with our blocks must split an off block with the off campus rotation (i.e., take first week of off block, 2 weeks of off campus rotation, and second week of off block).
- Please see liability insurance information on the tab above for the latest information.
