What kinds of students are you looking for?
  • We seek driven, curious, and collaborative students from a variety of disciplines—including veterinary medicine, data science, computer science, engineering, business, marketing, and more. If you’re interested in applying your skills to real-world challenges in animal health, we want to hear from you.
Who can apply?

All University of Illinois students are encouraged to apply, regardless of major or college. Our projects benefit from a wide range of skill sets—from business and engineering to communications, data science, and beyond. If you’re excited to apply your area of study to client challenges and build practical skills, this is the place for you.

What types of projects will I work on?
  • Projects vary widely, from developing data tools and dashboards, to conducting market research, to designing product prototypes or strategy recommendations. You’ll work directly with industry clients and be guided by experienced faculty and a project manager.
Do I need previous consulting or research experience?
  • Not necessarily. We’re looking for students with strong problem-solving skills, professionalism, and a willingness to learn. Previous project or client-facing experience is a plus but not required.
How much time will I need to commit?
  • Most roles require about 15 hours per week during the semester. Time commitments are outlined clearly before each project begins, and we work with your academic schedule to ensure balance.
How are teams structured?
  • Each project team typically includes 3–5 students with complementary skill sets. Teams are supported by a technical faculty advisor and a project manager to help ensure project success and your professional growth.
Is this a paid position?
  • Yes. All student consultants are paid hourly for their work. Rates vary depending on experience and role.
How long is a typical engagement?
  • Most projects last one semester (12–14 weeks), but students may be invited to stay on for future projects or longer-term collaborations depending on performance and interest.
What skills will I gain?
  • Client communication and professional consulting experience
  • Project management and teamwork
  • Technical skills related to your area of study (e.g., coding, data analysis, research, design)
  • Exposure to innovation in animal health and the veterinary industry
  • Confidence in navigating open-ended, real-world problems
