Tell us about your background!

I grew up in my dad’s mixed practice and wanted to be a veterinarian from quite early on.  (Funny note – I initially refused to take my kindergarten entrance exam, declaring that I did not have time for school since I already worked at the clinic.)  I spent a lot of time with animals as a kid – showing Herefords, riding and showing horses, doing obedience training with my dog, and gathering as many barn cats as I could (I had the entire Huxtable family from the Cosby show – my dad said I never met a cat that I didn’t want to take home).  Once I had been in practice for several years, I realized that I absolutely loved the teaching aspects of my job.  This led me to a faculty teaching position at Parkland College, which then segued into teaching in the Clinical Skills Learning Center and my current position at the University of Illinois.  I have continued in private practice throughout my teaching journey and enjoy the combination.

What are your special interests in your field of work?

Small Animal Internal Medicine, Geriatric Care, and Owner Education

What’s your role in the College of Veterinary Medicine and what do you enjoy the most about it?

I am an instructor for the Capstone course series with the Master of Veterinary Science program.  I love getting to know the students through their projects and helping them improve their problem-solving skills.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I have always been horse crazy. Currently, I have a Paint-Percheron gelding, Lucky, that I ride and show.  We have qualified for the dressage regional championships this season and are looking forward to competing in Kentucky in September.  I also enjoy baking, puzzles, and am enjoying peace and quiet with my husband on our small farm.
