MALDI-TOF, a.k.a. Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry Biotyper® (Bruker Daltronics, Inc.), enables the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory to identify as many as 95 bacteria, yeast, or fungi within 90 minutes from isolated colonies. The current Biotyper® database includes over 5,000 organisms and is updated frequently to include new taxa. The significance of shortening the time for identification of pathogens from days to minutes can be huge with regard to instituting appropriate antimicrobial therapy for herds or adjusting empirical choices for individual patients. The instrument uses protein profiles to compare isolates to the Biotyper® database, user-defined organisms, or other organisms for cluster analysis in epidemiological studies. Furthermore, the instrument uses very few consumables, reducing both the cost and environmental impact as well as enabling more complete identifications than with traditional biochemical approaches.
