Oversees the care and use of animals used in research, testing, and teaching and provides professional veterinary care. Designs and implements programs and provides expert guidance to research staff and animal care/use committees to support the wellbeing of animals used in teaching and research. Develops the unit’s strategic plan and budget, establishes operational standards and protocols for all animal-related services, and supervises staff to ensure proper functionality and regulatory compliance. Administers the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). Ensures compliance with all applicable federal and state regulations, accrediting body requirements, and institutional policies. Serves as Attending Veterinarian of record.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree from a school or college accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Council on Education, or equivalent training with Education Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates certification
2. License to practice veterinary medicine in Wisconsin or eligible to apply
3. Accreditation through the National Accreditation Program by the USDA/APHIS in Wisconsin or eligible to apply
4. License to purchase controlled substances or eligible to apply for a practitioner license
5. Experience or education related to research animal care and facilities
6. Evidence of strong communication skills, i.e. the ability to organize and present information in a logical manner
7. Demonstrated ability to foster constructive relationships with a wide range of stakeholders
8. Demonstrated experience using a variety of computer systems and programs (including web-based business applications) and/or creating/updating websites
Preferred Qualifications:
1. Experience managing an IACUC and/or applying regulations relating to the use of animals in research and teaching (includes the Animal Welfare Act, Public Health Service policy, USDA/APHIS)
2. Experience working in an AAALAC-accredited Animal Care Program
3. Experience with aquatic species.
4. Evidence of experience serving on committees, including developing agendas and minutes.
5. Certified Professional in IACUC Administration (CPIA)
6. Experience with enforcement, application and knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and accreditation guidelines.
7. Prior supervisory experience.
