Developing Country Session
Wildlife and Ecosystem Health of Terrestrial and Aquatic Habitats in Southern Africa
18 July - 8 August, 2007
Various Locations in the Republic of South Africa and Swaziland

Session two of Envirovet Summer Institute 2007 will provide students with the opportunity to discuss and to apply concepts and techniques learned during Envirovet session one. You will work with leading South African conservationists, scientists and environmental managers to explore topical issues relating to wildlife, livestock and human ecosystem health - from a local community, management and health professional's perspective. Several wildlife veterinarians associated with the Onderstepoort Veterinary Faculty, rehabilitation institutions and nature reserves will be visited to provide students with opportunities to examine and discuss environmental and wildlife-related problems as well as to assist with clinical procedures, when possible. The emphasis of this session will be to experience, in a firsthand way, the environmental, livestock and wildlife problems of southern Africa and how all these are managed by veterinarians and other professionals. Students should have a thorough knowledge of wildlife and zoonotic diseases after the visit. The epidemiology of infectious diseases shared among livestock, wildlife and humans (zoonoses) in Africa will be highlighted and the positive role that the veterinarians play will be discussed with colleagues and scientists working in these fields. Social problems strongly influence sustainable development on the African continent. Social scientists will discuss the role of man in Africa, from early hominids through the stone age and iron age to modern man, and how they used or abused their respective environments. The idea of Conservation Medicine in Africa will be evaluated throughout the course. The need to look holistically at the environment (ecosystem health), livestock and wildlife problems (animal health), and human health will be emphasized constantly. The potential role that veterinarians can play to solve these problems, through direct clinical input, participation in research projects, and astute planning and refinement of landscape and aquatic management will be evaluated.
