Research Interests

Viruses infect humans, animals, plants, insects, and microbes, and many of human illnesses are caused by viruses. Animal viruses can cross species boundaries to infect human populations, and viral infections of domestic animals can cause an enormous economic and societal impact. Virus replication relies on host cell machineries, and thus during infection continuous interaction occurs between virus and host. Virology is the study of the molecular and cellular aspects of such infections and aims to develop control measures againist infections of medical and veterinary importance. We use Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus (PRRSV) and Porcine Edpidemic Diarrhea Coronavirus (PEDV) as a model to study cell-virus interactions and viral evasion strategies against host immune surveillance. We have developed a reverse genetics system and using this system can generate genetically modified mutant viruses. This tool enables us to study various pathogenic mechanisms and to investigate roles that individual viral proteins play during infection.

show listBiography

  • Dr. Yoo studied Veterinary Medicine at Seoul National University in Korea. He completed his MSc in microbiology at the same institution and moved to Canada for further studies for virology in the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Ottawa. Following post-doctoral studies at the Vaccines and Infectious Disease Organization, Dr. Yoo was appointed Assistant Professor at Ontario Veterinary College University of Guelph where he initiated his current research on Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus (PRRSV) as an emerged pathogen. After 11 years at Guelph, Dr. Yoo moved to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2006 for new challenges in his research endeavor.
  • Dr. Yoo's research strengths lie in molecular virology, pathogenesis, and modern vaccinology, which forms the basis of his current research themes for two RNA viruses, an arterivirus PRRSV and a coronavirus PEDV.
