Research Interests

  • Improving our understanding of disease in free-ranging and captive wildlife, especially marine mammals. I am particularly interested in the pathogenesis and epidemiology of infectious diseases in wildlife and the role that environmental factors play in marine mammal diseases.
  • Factors involved in the development of urogenital carcinoma in California sea lions (Zalophus californianus).
  • Current research includes investigations on protozoal infections in pinnipeds, Brucella infections in marine mammals, the effects of oil on cetaceans, and domoic acid toxicity.
  • Investigative team member for a number of marine mammal Unusual Mortality Event investigations (http://www.nmfs.noaa.gov/pr/health/mmume/). My involvement in mortality event investigations allow me to collaborate with many different veterinarians and scientists in non-veterinary fields from a large variety of institutions throughout the United States.
