The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL) plays an essential role for the state of Illinois by providing diagnostic testing for infectious agents, toxins, and other causes of disease in a wide variety of species. The laboratory serves veterinarians, animal owners, food producers, public officials, and state/federal organizations and agencies. The VDL is the sole remaining public veterinary diagnostic laboratory in the state of Illinois.

Our multi-disciplinary team includes pathologists, clinical pathologists, histotechnologists, microbiologists, virologists, immunologists, parasitologists, and serologists. Many of our faculty specialize in one or more species and/or organ systems, offering considerable depth in differential diagnostic testing. Our faculty are accessible, providing frequent in-laboratory consultation to referring veterinarians, food production providers, and state/federal agencies.

The laboratory is fully accredited by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD), the National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN), National Poultry Improvement Plan (NPIP), Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), and Veterinary Laboratory Investigation and Response Network (VetLIRN). Our Zoological Pathology Program located in metropolitan Chicago, provides service, training, and research to Shedd Aquarium, Brookfield and Lincoln Park Zoos, as well as wildlife organizations and agencies. The VDL also operates a full service satellite laboratory in a large multi-specialty veterinary hospital in Buffalo Grove, IL.
