With the support of the University of Illinois and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Dr. Hess developed a computer program called STAGES. The software was designed to track testicular germ cells and stages of spermatogenesis in time forwards and backwards through the cycle of the seminiferous epithelium. Vanguard Productions purchased the copyright to this program for the purposes of making it available worldwide and to further its development. Vanguard specializes in Electronic Publishing of Science and Educational materials and makes available free of charge the STAGES program to all UI students. Dr. Hess and a former colleague, Dr. Lonnie Russell, have taught a special 2-day course on "Histopathological Evaluation of the Testis", which was designed specifically for pathologists and toxicologists. In the honor of Dr. Russell, who passed away in 2001, Dr. Hess will continue this tradition.
