Susan Szuch, a sophomore in journalism at the University of Illinois College of Media, has won a Michael E. DeBakey Award for Journalism and Media Excellence from the Foundation for Biomedical Research for a story she wrote in the Daily Illini. The story showcased research by Timothy Fan, associate professor in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Medicine, and his work with Illinois chemistry professor Paul Hergenrother in developing cancer treatment for dogs, which led to human clinical trials.

Other winners of the national journalism award include reporters from Wired, 60 Minutes, NPR, and Smithsonian.com.
