News-Gazette (June 3) – Prof. Fred Kummerow, who died May 31, conducted pioneering research on heart disease and diet, identifying trans fats, not cholesterol, as the culprit more than 60 years ago.

The independent stance cost him research funding.

“He managed to fund his laboratory almost exclusively on gift funds, which was unique in itself,” UI colleague and Professor Duncan Ferguson said.
